Part political thriller, part dystopian sci-fi, this novella's intriguing premise explores what happens when a growing mistrust of the government coincides with a seemingly self-appointed sadistic leader. Meanwhile, two federal agents--Maynard and Brett--get caught up in something they don't understand, but both will fight selflessly to defeat the growing threat to their country. The narration is distant, keeping us from intimately knowing either of the main characters, but that works to heighten the suspense, leading to action-packed final chapters. On a side note, it's refreshing to see such a strong female protagonist in Maynard. She and Brett have a fine-tuned partnership and make for interesting and likable heroes.Product details

Didn't really grab me or go anywhere.
I loved this book! My favorite genres are Sci-fi/Fantasy and this fit the bill perfectly. A fast-paced thriller with incredibly suspenseful moments. If you like the atmosphere of the X-Files, you will like "The Start of the Majestic World." Berthold Gambrel combines political rivalries with environmental issues and a military machine. Plus.....well you'll just have to read it yourself to find out!
This novella looks to be a promising start to a thriller-like science fiction series. The story takes place in the not too distant future (50 years maybe?) and involves two federal agents, Maynard and Brett, who are tracking down a radio talk show host, Hector Nightingale, who has been inciting his listeners to rebellion. During the course of the book the agents run up against Russians who appear to be assisting Nightingale, a rogue U.S. Army colonel, scientists developing climate control techniques, and human-like robots. I enjoyed this fast-paced story but would have liked to see a little more of what drives the relationship between Maynard and her partner, Brett. The book's ending promises that their adventures will be continuing!
Mr. Gambrel’s first novel starts in high speed, like a sci-fi “Run, Lola, Run.” It’s rough in spots and it leaves the reader wanting a great deal more detail, but it’s clearly full of promise (which is delivered in Mr. Gambrel’s unrelated second novel, THE DIRECTORATE).
There are so many interesting premises and germs for many more books in this book. I was left with the notion that one could spend many an entertaining hour throwing ideas around with the author.
I’m eagerly anticipating whatever Mr. Gambrel publishes next!
